    About Kayakoy Area

The charming and natural surrounding of Kaya Koy is situated 8 kilometres from Fethiye.

It is an ancient Greek village dating back to the 18th century, which was abandoned in 1923 and now under protection by UNESCO with some ongoing restoration works particularly to the lower Church which has some interesting features and hand painted frescos.

The hillside is covered in ruins, Lycian tombs and a Church and offers the perfect place to walk and explore whilst taking in the magnificent views. Some of the old stone houses still have broken windows and fragments of doors and toilets looking desolate and quite haunting. You are able to walk amongst the ruins and get a real feel for the place, taking you back in time.

The history is that the Greek village, then known as Karmylassos and now locally known as ‘Ghost Town’ had a population exchange agreement between the Turkish and Greek governments with the village becoming deserted in 1923 when the Greek people living in Kaya/Karmylassos returned to Greece. It once had a population of some 25,000 inhabitants and now there are just 2000. In future years when the village was starting to rebuild itself the new residents built houses on the flat land for farming purposes, rather than settling in the derelict stone houses on the hillside.

The village nowadays has several traditional eating houses famous for their pancakes and village breakfasts and some high class restaurants including like Izela, which has a beautiful courtyard setting and Mediterranean menu. Or the Turkish restaurant and wine house (called Lebessos) which is set in a renovated stone house of 400 years old and once owned by President Nicholaus and also the traditional BBQ restaurants (we recommend Cinbals) where you are able to sit in traditional seating areas/kosks and sample different mezes whilst BBQ’ing your own food (the restaurant bring the bbq smoking hot and ready to cook)

Activities in the area include horse riding, camel rides, cycling and of course walking in a wonderful serene and interesting setting.

The situation of Kaya is 8km South from Fethiye harbour town, 4km West from lively tourist resort of Hisaronu, 8km North-West from Olu Deniz Beach and Blue Lagoon or a much quieter spot beach called Gemiler is 8km South of Kaya.

Gemiler is behind the hills of Kaya Koy and is also famous because the beach area overlooks St Nicholas Island (said to be the birth place of Father Christmas/Saint Nicholas). On the road to Gemiler Bay from Kaya Koyu the Afkule Monastery is carved into the rocks, and has wonderful views over the bays and makes for a lovely walking area through the pine forests and with a refreshing breeze from the sea.
